A Carefully Worded Response from Senator Feinstein Re: Privatizing Air Traffic Control

Dear Ms. Bender:

Thank you for writing to express your concerns about proposals to privatize the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) air traffic control system. I appreciate hearing your views and welcome the opportunity to respond.

I believe that the existence of the FAA is critical to ensuring a safe and efficient aerospace system in our country, and I strongly support its mission as a government agency. I support continued funding for the FAA rather than temporary measures, so that safety-critical employees, such as air traffic controllers, are not threatened with the need to work without pay in the event of a lapse in funding.

You may be pleased to know that I voted for the “FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016” (Public Law 114-190), which reauthorizes the FAA through September 30, 2017. President Obama signed the bill into law on July 15, 2016.  Notably, this law deliberately does not privatize our air traffic control system.

Please be assured that I have carefully noted your opposition to privatizing the FAA’s air traffic control system and will be mindful of your concerns should relevant legislation come before me for consideration in the future.  I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind when legislation to reauthorize the FAA comes before me in the 115th Congress.

Once again, thank you for writing. Should you have any other questions or comments, please call my Washington office at (202) 224-3841 or visit my website at feinstein.senate.gov. You can also follow me online at YouTubeFacebook and Twitter, and you can sign up for my email newsletter at feinstein.senate.gov/newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

  Dianne Feinstein
         United States Senator
